HOA Tells Texas Family It Is Too Early To Put Up Christmas Decorations

A homeowner's association in Texas believes that it is too early to begin celebrating Christmas and ordered a family to take down their decorations until it is closer to Christmas. Claudia and Nick Simonis decided to kick off the holiday season early this year and put up their decorations on November 1.

This year, their decorations include a giant snowman, an inflatable helicopter with Santa hanging off the back, and a light-up reindeer. The Simonis' don't usually decorate this early, but Claudia is eight months pregnant and she wanted to make sure her other two children got to see the yard decorated for Christmas.

"I feel kind of heavy, so the earlier we can put out the decorations, the better," Claudia told WOAI. "Because probably in two more weeks, I'm not going to be able to build all this."

Three days after their decorations went up, the Simonis' received a notice from Diamond Association Management & Consulting telling them that they must remove the decorations "until closer to the holiday season." The letter did not say when it was acceptable to begin decorating, though it did tell them that all decorations must come down ten days after the holiday

The Simonis' say they have no intention of taking down their Christmas decorations.

“I’m pregnant. And it took us forever to put them up," Claudia said. "If anything, we’re adding more stuff.”

"We're not going to do it," added Nick. "It's the Christmas spirit. We're not going to be forced by the HOA to take it down."

They will have the support of their neighbors, who say they are planning to put up their Christmas decorations as well. Charles Minton already started and put up a giant Merry Christmas ornament in his front yard, along with a few penguins.

"I don't think this should be an issue," said Minton. "These are the holidays. This is what we do. We take care of our neighbors. That's what a neighborhood is about."
